Driving Rules
- The speed limit on open roads is 100 km/h (62 mph). In towns it is 50 km/h (31 mph). Speed cameras operate everywhere.
- Many rural bridges have only one lane. Follow the blue sign and give way when required.
- Campervans longer than 7.5 m (24 ft) need extra room on sharp turns, such as on the Milford Road.
- Three electronic toll roads are located near Auckland. Pay online or at petrol stations within 5 days to avoid a fine.
- In the South Island some petrol stations are more than 100 km (62 miles) apart. Keep your fuel tank at least half full.
- Snow chains are required when the "Chains Essential" sign is displayed on mountain passes. Ask your rental company for chains.

Water and Waste Services
- Most BP, Z and Caltex petrol stations in towns have fresh-water taps and waste dump stations. Look for the blue campervan sign.
- Public waste dump stations are shown in the CamperMate app and on nzta.govt.nz. They are often located next to i-SITE visitor centres.
- Card-only petrol stations in remote areas may not have water or waste facilities. Fill your water tank before travelling to these areas.
Local Tips
- UV levels are very high in summer. Apply sunscreen even when it is cloudy.
- Sandflies are common near lakes and on the West Coast. Keep doors closed at dawn and dusk.
- Check MetService road snow warnings before crossing Arthur's Pass, Lindis Pass or the Desert Road.
- Mobile phone coverage is limited in Fiordland, the West Coast and parts of Northland. Download offline maps and share your travel route with someone.
- Call 111 for police, fire or ambulance. For road updates call 0800 44 44 49 (NZ Transport Agency).
- Many towns do not allow overnight street parking between 22:00 and 06:00 unless signs allow it. Look for the red "No freedom camping" symbol.
