Driving Information

  • Speed limits: motorway 120 km/h, main roads 90 km/h and towns 50 km/h unless signs indicate otherwise.
  • Many highways are toll-free since 2021, but some AP- routes still charge fees. You can pay by credit card or use the electronic Telepeaje tag sold at fuel stations.
  • Low-Emission Zones in Madrid and Barcelona require the green DGT "Distintivo" sticker. Foreign vehicles must register online before entry.
  • The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% (lower for new drivers). Police conduct frequent roadside checks.
  • Service areas display "GLP" signs for LPG gas refills. Some fuel stations close on Sunday afternoons in rural areas.
  • Snow chains or winter tyres are required on marked mountain passes in the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada.

Fuel and Services

  • Repsol and Cepsa highway service areas offer diesel fuel, LPG gas, fresh water and waste tank disposal.
  • Most Área de Servicio Autocaravanas in large cities provide 24-hour water and waste services for 3-5 euros.
  • Carrefour supermarket fuel stations accept foreign credit cards and have extended hours.

Important Information

  • Sleeping inside a parked campervan is legal if you do not extend awnings or chairs or make excessive noise. Setting up equipment outside counts as illegal wild camping with fines starting at 200 euros.
  • Dial 112 for all emergencies. Operators speak English, French and German.
  • Forest fire risk is extreme from June to September. Open flames are prohibited in national parks.
  • August and Easter week see fully booked campsites nationwide. Make reservations in advance or choose inland areas.
  • Many Spanish towns enforce quiet hours from 23:00 to 08:00 in public parking areas.
  • Summer road surface temperatures can exceed 50°C. Check tyre pressure each morning.
