Driving Information
- Speed limits are 90 km/h (56 mph) on secondary roads and 130 km/h (81 mph) on the A18/A19 highways unless signs show lower speeds. Many rural roads are narrow, so allow extra travel time.
- Highways use a ticket system. Take a ticket at the entrance booth and pay by card or cash when you exit.
- City centres have ZTL restricted zones where only authorised vehicles can enter. Cameras automatically issue fines to unauthorised vehicles. Park outside these zones and walk into the city centre.
- The Messina Strait ferry operates 24 hours and takes about 25 minutes. Buy tickets at the port. No advance booking is needed for standard campervans under 7 metres.
- Strong Sirocco winds can affect tall vehicles, especially on coastal highways. Reduce speed when warning signs are present.

Fuel, Water, and Waste
- ENI and Q8 service stations on main roads sell diesel fuel and often have "Camper Service" areas for grey water disposal and fresh water refilling.
- Many towns have signed "Scarico Camper" (camper dump) points near sports facilities. Bring a 1 euro coin for the water tap.
- Larger campgrounds allow non-guests to empty toilet cassettes for a small fee. Ask at reception.
Practical Tips
- Wild camping outside designated areas is illegal. Fines can exceed €300. Use "Area di Sosta" parking areas for simple overnight stops.
- Summer temperatures can reach 40°C inland. Carry at least 5 litres of drinking water per person per day.
- Keep coins for parking metres as many machines do not accept foreign cards.
- Call 112 for police or general emergency and 118 for ambulance.
- Mount Etna can close roads after volcanic eruptions. Check local news before travelling to Rifugio Sapienza.
- Speed cameras are common. Look for orange "Velo OK" boxes at village entrances.
