Driving Tips

  • City roads usually have a 50 km/h speed limit while main highways are 110 km/h unless signs show otherwise.
  • Dipped headlights must stay on 24 hours a day in all seasons.
  • Winter tyres are mandatory 1 Dec–31 Mar when winter conditions exist; many rentals include these.
  • Entering central Stockholm requires the congestion tax (trängselskatt). Cameras record the licence plate and the rental company passes the cost to you.
  • The alcohol limit is 0.02% BAC; roadside checks are common.
  • Watch for moose and deer, especially at dawn and dusk on forest roads like the E4 and Road 73.
  • "Ställplats" means a basic motorhome parking area, often paid at a machine with limited services.

  • E4 Bro Rastplats (northbound): large pull-through areas, drinking water, free dump point.

Local Tips

  • Right of Public Access does not allow motor vehicles off-road; stay on marked tracks or parking areas.
  • Many parking lots ban overnight stays between 22:00 and 06:00; signs read "Nattparkering förbjuden".
  • Ferries to the outer islands take vehicles only on selected routes; book well ahead in summer.
  • Carry a contactless credit card; most unmanned fuel stations accept cards only.
  • Emergency number is 112 and works nationwide.
  • Black ice can appear even in April; keep a larger stopping distance than usual.
